[FILM] Silent Night, Deadly Night 1 and 2 (1984, 1987)
The first Silent Night, Deadly Night is a mid-to-upper-tier 80s slasher with some pretence at trying to say something interesting about religious oppression. There's a nasty, mean-spirited tone to the proceedings that really adds to the atmosphere - unlike some other slashers of the time it is actually a little unsettling at times. Towards the second half of the film, any interesting themes present in the beginning kind of fade away and are replaced with typical genre carnage, which to be fair, is quite impressive with its gruesome kills.
The second film, on the other hand, may be one of the best "worst" films I have ever seen. Half of this thing is a clip show of the first film, so the new content only takes up roughly 45 minutes, and it is filled with some of the most hilariously bad acting ever put to film. There isn't even any mention of Christmas, really, until the last 10 minutes or so. This is really exceptional garbage, and I can completely understand how it got its cult status.
