[NOVEL] Negative Space (2020)
The main two things I appreciated about Negative Space are its relentless, pitch-black atmosphere, and its restraint in not over-explaining its more fantastical elements. Its very difficult to write something that is truly bleak without seeming edgy, and I think that B.R. Yeager succeeds here - this is one of the most hopeless novels I have ever read.
I was particularly impressed by the poetic prose, too. In interviews the author cited the grindcore band Pig Destroyer as an inspiration, and in my opinion this is very apt - both artists deal with extremely dark themes, but there's a kind of lyricism at the center of it all that draws you in.
