[FILM] Oddity (2024)

As a pure scare machine, Oddity is extremely well made, and it’s quite admirable given the low budget. It ratchets up tension very well, and the jump scares here all feel earned. The small comedic touches are also appreciated. The script unfortunately is quite pedestrian, which in and of itself wouldn’t be a problem if it made just a little bit more sense. Some of the character motivations are a little bit bonkers, and certain reveals which are intended to be shocking are very predictable. With better writing this director could easily make something that stands up to any recent Blumhouse film, like The Conjuring, or Insidious. For now, though, I'm not sure if this is something I am going to be revisiting any time soon.
